Intermediate Kintsugi: Intricate Repair

Details

May 09, 2026, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Morning Ceramics Studio, 239 SE 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, USA

About the class

Instructor: Emi Joyce

Kintsugi (金継ぎ, gold joinery) is the Japanese craft of repairing ceramics. Repaired lines are highlighted with gold instead of being hidden. The philosophy of kintsugi is often taught as an embracing of the imperfections in life - highlighting the beauty of human flaws.

This workshop is focused on intricate repairs with many broken pieces, and filling large gaps where chunks of a piece might be completely missing! Emi will guide you to puzzle all the pieces together and fill in to reform the original shape. All materials, including a broken ceramic vessel, are provided, but participants are welcome to bring a their own damaged ceramic piece for repair (see below for more details).

Previously taking the Modern Kintsugi workshop is not required.

Since non food-safe materials are used during the workshop, repaired pieces will be for display only.

Emi Joyce grew up in Tokyo, Japan and moved to Portland, OR in 2010. She is formerly a full-time bench jeweler and apparel designer, and currently works as a kintsugi restorer and instructor - repairing hundreds of broken ceramics at home and regularly teaching kintsugi at multiple locations. You can learn more about her kintsugi work via Instagram: @portlandkintsugirepair

  • Experience requirement: None! All you’ll need are some clothes you don't mind getting a little dirty and a good attitude!

  • What's included: All supplies will be provided, including a broken ceramic bowl to practice.

  • What to bring (optional): You are also welcome to bring a couple of damaged ceramics from home. The material must be clay, ceramic or porcelain. No glass or wood. Items must be glazed and smaller than 10 inches. They can be shattered or even missing pieces! Old glue must be removed and cracks must be free from stains or food materials.

  • What you'll be making: You'll be repairing a piece of ceramic using the kintsugi technique. As the materials for the repair are not food safe, repaired items are for display only.

  • Schedule: There will be a break for lunch half way through the workshop!
