Morning Ceramics Studio, 239 SE 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, USA
About the class
Join long-time ceramic artist and sculptor, Christina Orthwein, as we spend the weekend creating a multi-faceted slab-built mug, as a canvas to explore striking low relief carving, surface design, and plaster-based making.
This two-day workshop explores simple systems that unlock layered surface work and open up unexpected possibilities in clay. Expect plenty of “a-ha!” moments as familiar tools and processes shift into new creative territory.
Students will work through:
Plaster design techniques: sketching, transfer, carving, and mold making
Slab pressing and surface development
Functional slab construction and handle pulling
Layering texture and dimensional surface design
Building repeatable design systems for future work
Day one will focus on developing different designs using plaster carving - sourcing inspiration, sketching, transfering, carving, and mold making -alongside pressing slabs and pulling handles.
Day two centers on constructing and refining the mug form, plus creating a custom silicone carving tool to take home. Additional optional demos may include low relief tile casting and pressed ornaments or pendants.
Known for her nature-inspired surfaces, intricate sculptural slab work, and generous teaching style, Christina brings over 25 years of teaching & clay experience to this immersive weekend workshop.
