Slab & Resist Vases
Details
May 24, 2025, 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
Morning Ceramics Studio, 239 SE 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, USA
About the class
Instructor: Margaret
In this double-weekend workshop, we’ll be exploring the humble world of handbuilding—using simple slab construction to build a complex and striking vase. While slab building can have a bit of a reputation for being finicky, or prone to cracks, we’ll explore how this basic, yet versatile technique can create a sound framework that supports your unique design from start to finish.
Bridging the worlds of 2D and 3D, your instructor will guide you through planning, building, shaping, refining, and burnishing your vase in Week 1. Along the way, you’ll add “miter corner” to your ceramic vocabulary and “seam reinforcer” as a new line on your pottery resumé!
After bisque firing, your pieces will be ready to decorate for Week 2, where we’ll be delving into simple but highly effective wax resist techniques and preparing your vase for the glaze kiln. This less-traveled approach to surface design introduces foundational methods of pattern and contrast that just might spark your next exciting rabbit hole of ceramic discovery!
