About the class
Instructor: Katya
Step outside of your throwing comfort zone to explore the wide possibilities of platter making!
Join us for a two-day workshop that will cover throwing large platters on the potter’s wheel, start to finish.
Day 1 will have students getting familiar with the amount of material that it takes to create these large pieces – ranging from small, warmup platters using 5lbs, all the way up to large serving platters with 15lbs of clay! We’ll chat quick cheats for centering a large mass with little effort, before diving into the key technique of ‘dry throwing’ used to make these heirloom pieces.
Day 2 will cover trimming, drying tips, proper storage & handling, and all of the other steps your platters will take between your hands and the kiln.
Perfect for warm, hosted dinners on handmade tableware, or as a large canvas to hold color, expression, or patterns - platters hold endless possibilities once you get just a bit familiar with them!
Experience Level: Intermediate wheel throwing experience – comfortable centering + throwing 5lbs of clay
What to Bring:
Apron, washcloth, closed-toed shoes, & freshly-trimmed fingernails
Hair tie for long hair - leave dangling jewelry, rings, watches etc at home!
What's included: Materials and tools for use during the workshop
What you'll be making: You're favorite new hand-thrown platter! With option to purchase and keep more
Firing Information: Pieces will be bisque fired after the workshop
Schedule: Saturday Jun 13, 10am to 1pm (Throwing) + Sunday Jun 14, 10am to 1pm (Trimming)
