Morning Ceramics Studio, 239 SE 6th Ave, Portland, OR 97214, USA

About the class

Instructor: Sara

A gauzy mantle of mist peels off the towering crags of a rugged mountain range. In the lowlands, a scrubby savanna meets a mighty river delta. Tectonic activity and myriad watersheds yield lush marshes and peaty bogs, desert tundras and dense jungles. Village forts, strategic castles, and ancient ruins pepper the landscape.

Invoke your inner cartographer in this eclectic all-levels mapmaking workshop! We will zoom out to cover the basics of clay as a material, how to make robust attachments, what tools will suit our sculpting goals. We will then dive into world design, with discussion of fantasy map tropes, real world landscapes, and what details make a narrative sing.

We will spend the bulk of our time in the sculpt, forming our miniature terrain, before we paint the landscape with colored underglazes.

Whether you're seeking to sculpt an imaginary place or a real location, this workshop will provide the tools, techniques, and feedback to bring it to life!

  • Experience Requirement: None!

  • What to bring: We recommend a towel, and notebook & pen for ideas! Please also bring along any inspirational materials, photos, or favorite books!

  • What you'll be making: Students can expect to make and decorate one (1) map. The studio will bisque fire + clear glaze the maps, ready for pick up a few weeks later.
