Description
An intermediate look into the world of atmospheric firing. Expand your previous ceramic know-how to create high-fire pieces and take part in firing the “sodapop” kiln over at The Clay Compound in NE Portland. Students will be exposed to concepts of atmospheric firing techniques and learn how a reduced soda atmosphere affects ceramics wares. This workshop will include making ceramics wares, loading, firing, unloading and cleaning of the kiln and wares. SCHEDULE: Week 1 - 6: Instruction & Making Wednesdays, July 21 - August 25 6pm to 9pm at Morning Ceramics Studio Week 7: Glaze Formulation Wednesday, September 1 6pm to 9pm at The Clay Compound Week 8: The Soda Kiln Varying times at The Clay Compound* Friday, September 10th Kiln Loading - 6pm to midnight Saturday, September 11th Firing - 6am to 8pm Sunday, September 12th Unload, Clean, and Potluck - 5pm to 9pm *Students are encouraged to attend as much or as little of week 8 events as they are able. Week 8 times are approximate and may change depending on the progress of the firing. Classes will take place in our socially distanced work stations and masks are required at all times. *New Covid-19 policies may be in effect when class begins.
